There’s Something About Racing

If you’re reading this, you might be a fan of F1. You might have seen Drive to Survive on Netflix. You might have sat down on a Sunday for two hours to watch a full Grand Prix. You might even have a full list of the last WDC winners going back to the year you were born. No matter how big of a fan of the sport you are, I’m writing this newsletter for you.

Introduction

If you’re reading this, you might be a fan of F1. You might have seen Drive to Survive on Netflix. You might have sat down on a Sunday for two hours to watch a full Grand Prix. You might even have a full list of the last WDC winners going back to the year you were born.

No matter how big of a fan of the sport you are, I’m writing this newsletter for you.

I had a journey into F1 fandom like many others. It all started in March 2022 after a comedian on a podcast I listened to said “If you’ve ever had a slight interest in motorsports, nows the time to get into it.” They were just starting out a new season after the peak finale of the 2021 season. New cars. New drivers. New rules.

Having not really been a sports fan growing up, Formula One was surprisingly easy for to get into. The matching uniforms and roster of just 20 people really made me feel like I could understand what was going on, and so I signed up for a free trial of F1TV and watched my first race, the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.

Since that day, I’ve been following F1 and motorsports daily. I haven’t missed a race weekend, and I have become a database of F1 history and knowledge in my friend group.

What is this newsletter about?

The main reason I am starting this newsletter, is so I have a space to talk about Formula One. I often find myself rambling on about the off-track drama that happens each weekend, when my friends ask a simple question about the race. I want to use this newsletter as a way to share what I know with you about the sport and why I think it is the greatest form of competition that exists.

Formula One will be the main focus of the newsletter, but I might sneak in a few thoughts I have about other sports. I will probably bring up some cool stories about F1 from years past. I’ll tell you which races you can go back and rewatch and they are just as entertaining. I might even talk about the political state of some countries as the caravan of cars travel from track to track throughout the season.

I am going to talk about pretty much anything remotely related to Formula One. My goal with this newsletter is to make F1 cool to you. I want you to be excited enough about a race to watch practice sessions, bug your friends, and clap at your television when your favorite driver has a great drive.

What makes F1 the best sport?

I never was interested in sports growing up. Mainly because I wasn’t good at any of them (I once scored for the wrong team in a basketball game). However, there was also another reason in my subconsciousness; I just couldn’t get myself to be competitive. I played on a lot of losing teams, worst in the division, and typically we never brought home any trophies.

I did join the cross country team in high school, because my brother did it, and so I could stay in shape during my teen years. I didn’t know at the time how influential these years would be for me. We travelled around to different courses, ran in events with hundreds of kids, and spent hours tracking times, making sure I stayed on pace.

All these little things were slowly shaping me to fall in love with a sport. One not like other sports, because this one isn’t a game — it’s a race.

Racing is a simple as competition can get. You and a group of others start on a track together, at the same time, and see who can cross the finish line first. There is something about it that I find extremely satisfying. Wether I am in the grandstands cheering as a 200mph machine comes whizzing by, or I am giving every ounce of energy I have into the final sprint of a 5k charity race. Races aren’t just sporting events, they are human experiences.

It’s unlike any other kind of social event. You have high-class, ultra-wealthy events like the Monaco Grand Prix. Where it’s sometimes more entertaining to try and find who has the coolest yacht at the bay. And on the other side of the ocean, you have entire races on dirt tracks. Race events are places for people to connect and for athletes to perform their best they’ve ever done. I think that racing is in the same category as music and art. It’s something that we can connect to, as humans; and I think everyone should go to a race at least once in your life.

For me, Formula One has become the most interesting thing. It’s been something I want to keep learning about. I want to find out details about racing legends from eras past. I want to learn how different wings and flaps on the car affect the aerodynamics. I want to read how the money moves behind-the-scenes of each race. I want to know everything there is about this sport.

And I want to share it with you.

That’s essentially the entire reason behind it. So if even if you have the smallest little baby pinky finger sized interest in Formula One. Please consider subscribing to this newsletter. I don’t know how often I will write, but I know I have a lot more to say; so I hope you stick around.

Cheers.

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
